wait upon a shirtsleeve, pocketed
with some charm to deride
this and that misfortune of longing,
all due calm preceding with its appropriate pace,
and all inferences hushed and sighing.

that was the look shot at me,
from age to age and moral compass shocked,
mistaken,
to forgo that equal blameless measure
of faith

an unknown tempest blocked by eyeing knowledge,
a fortuitous smile shaped by hurt.
that cautious, trying way that our feet step
forward,
holding only bricks and moats
