Children (8/9/10)

August 15, 2011

following clocks
on the way to afternoons,
stopping only to to check the grass
and compare the soles of shoes
with careful glances over hedges

a torrid sea of sprained bones and smiles
freckling down the driveway
each night,
peace in sneaks marching into the infinite

socks lifted up past ankles,
gripping soft games and tantrums
as they reach for knees,

no matter how many backward glances
none of them come back to claim
the ruddy patches of dirt
once hallowed

except to bring
skirts and lashes
to roost
